MEAT FOR CATS AND DOGS
Supplies Arranged For The arrangements that have been made to ensure a reasonable quantity of suitable foods being available for the large number of domestic cats and dogs in New Zealand were detailed by the Food and Rationing Controller, Mr. J. E. Thomas, last evening. “The recent alterations to the couponed and coupon-free schedules of meats have created a somewhat difficult situation with regard to the feeding of domestic pets, particularly dogs,” said Mr. Thomas. “To obviate the necessity of pfet-owners’ surrendering coupons for cat and dog meat, arrangements have been completed for supplies of sheep’s heads, beef necks and other meat sundries, to be available from retail butchers. These items will no doubt be something new for the average domestic pet, but owners can be assured that they are all entirely suitable for the purpose and should keep a dog or cat healthy and in good condition.” A leaflet on the subject of these foods is in the course of preparation and should be available to the public shortly through the various branches of the S.P.C.A. “There is definitely no need,” said Mr. Thomas, “for anyone to destroy a household pet, as with a little ingenuity and forethought it will be found that with the supplies available from butchers, plus the addition of household scraps, there should be sufficient food for all domestic animals.” In Great Britain, where there is very little in the way of meat sundries, it has been the experience that with sufficient planning of household resources, domestic pets can be fed and kept healthy under wartime conditions.”
