MORE ARRIVALS

Probation And Colt From England

(By

St. Simon.)

Two more English thoroughbreds have reached New Zealand safely and are being consigned from Wellington today to their new homes in the Auckland district. They are the six-year-old stallion Probation, who has been acquired by the Mardelia Stud, Otahuhu, and a three-year-old unnamed colt by Fearless Fox from Dusky Maid, who is the property of Messrs. J. and J. C. Fletcher, Alton Lodge Stud, Tc Kauwhata. Both horses are whole brown in colour with 110 markings, and tire from the Son-in-Law male line. Probation is a masculine type of horse by Trimdon from Light Sentence, by Pharos from Book Law, from the most successful of the families bred and raced by Lord Astor. The three-year-old is very true to the Son-In-Law type. His <sire, Fearless Fox, was a highclass stayer, winning the Ascot Gold Vase (two miles) and Goodwood Cup (two miles and Ave furlongs), and was beaten a head in the Doncaster Cup (two miles and a quarter). The colt’s dam is Dusky Maid, who was among a shipment of English mares which got as far as New York about two years ago and remain there awaiting transhipment to New Zealand. Both horses were imported for their new owners through the agency of Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd.

Not Many Visitors. The effect of transport restrictions is readily apparent in the fields which have accepted for the Hawke’s Bay Jockey Club's winter meeting, to be held at Hastings tomorrow. The visiting contingent is restricted to six from districts south of Hastings. However, Hastings and Napier comprise one of the busiest training centres in the North Island, and meetings In this area are practically self-supporting in the matter of fields. Though tomorrow's events have not filled quite so well as usual there, they are big enough to ensure a good day’s racing. Hastings possesses one of the best provincial tracks in the Dominion. The course is roomy with a long straight, and even in the worst of winters the going is seldom very heavy. Another for Epping. On his Wanganui and Manawatu form Epping appears to bold a mortgage over the Hawke’s Bay Hurdles in spite of his Increased weight, though Pompit, Flying Spy and First Edition should all make it Interesting for him. Epping won the Rangltira Hurdles at Awapuni effortlessly under 10.2 at a difference of only a few pounds from Authoress and Young Charles, and that form is considerably better than possessed by tomorrow’s opponents. Possibly Pompit may be the danger as liis weight is down to 9.8. Not Many Offering. The field for the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase reflects the shortage of this type of performer, and there is a good opportunity for one of the newcomers to get on the winning last. Malacca has failed in his last two starts at Awapuni and Marton through exhaustion, and for the time being appears to have lost his staying capacity Opaltown fluked the Wanganui Steeplechase, but his third in the Manawatu Steeplechase and success in the Matilda Steeplechase at the Manawatu patriotic meeting were fully merited. However, it would not take a good horse to defeat Opaltown, and Rhodes, Lucullug Boy and Tigreterre are three with prospects in a weak field. Slglow Leased. A 12-months’ lease of Siglow has been taken by the Greenmeadows trainer R. J.' Gardiner, who has been handling the horse for the past few months for his new owner, Mr. J. H. Woods. Siglow is topweight for the Hastings Hack Hurdles tomorrow, but has not contested a Jumping race since he won the Rimu Hurdles at Trentham two years ago. Stabicmutes Divided.

The Gisborne-owned hurdlers, First Edition and Blue Title, will not run against each other at Hastings tomorrow. Blue Title is an acceptor for the hack hurdles and First Edition will contest the open event. Both are winners as jumpers. First Edition won at Trentham last winter and Blue Title won at Napier . two month ago, with First Edition the run-ner-up in the same event. Blue Title gave promise of better form on that occasion. A Likely Type. Oisuara, who is to have his first race over hurdles tomorrow, is a four-year-old full brother to Whackie. His form on the flat does not compare with that of his relative at the same age, but in his recent racing he has shown signs of improvement, and has two seconds and a third to his credit in his last four starts on the flat. Like Whackie, Oisuara has plenty of size and strength and is a likely type of horse to do well if he takes kindly to hurdling. Good accounts have been received of his schooling at Greenmeadows. Has Had Experience.

Black Saint, who is a candidate for the hack hurdles at Hastings tomorrow, has not raced since the Hawke’s Bay Hunt meeting in August, 1942. About that time he was showing some promise as a novice hurdler, and had three seconds to his credit at Hastings, Marton and Napier. He is a six-year-old horse by Kincardine. A Long Absence.

Tigreterre, an acceptor for the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase tomorrow, has not contested a cross-country event since he pulled up lame after finishing fourth in the Wanganpl Grandstand Steeplechase in June, 1941. The previous season Tigreterre won the Napier Steeplechase, the Russell Memorial Steeplechase at Hastings, and the Rangitikel Hunt Cup. His only start since 1941 was in a bracelet race for amateur riders at the Waipukurau Easter meeting this year. First Experience. Several unraced horses will be making their first appearance in public in the maiden event at the Hawke’s Bay meeting tomorrow. Details of their breeding are as follows:— Treasure Tee, br. c., 3yrs., by Legatee— Treasure Green (Mr. F. Culling). Kauri Queen, br. f., 2yrs., by Gynerium— Foreign Queen (Mr. D. Kemp). Curlality, ch. f., 2yrs., by Tiderace— Courtesy (Mr. J. D. Ormond). Master Gary, b. c., 3yrs., by Broiefort— Nurse Nightingale (Mr. C. IV. Merrylees). Ormond). First For Three Years. Royal Pageant, top weight for the Final Handicap at Hastings tomorrow, has not raced for three years. His last appearance w.as made at the Hawke’s Bay Cnp meeting in Marell. 1941, when on the first day lie won the Oreka Handicap, about seven furlongs, with 8.3, from Centennial, Roeon and Native Chief. He is now au eight-y car-old. One Previous Sturt. Ann Hatfield, a three-year-old filly by Bulandshar from Hest, who Is engaged in the maiden race at Hastings, has not raeed since the Hawke’s Bay winter meeting last year when, having her first, start, she finished third to ’The Grand and Silver Coin in a division of a maiden race. For an inexperienced two-year-old she showed a good turn of speed, having been with the leaders to the distance. She comes from a family of good gallopers, her dam being a sister to Shu and a half-sister to Hagen. Omitted From Acceptances. Exit. 9.0, was omitted from the telegraphed list of acceptances for the Hawke’s Bay Steeplechase. Answers to Inquiries.
