AMERICAN DRIVE ON SAIPAN
LONDON, June 22. American troops on Saipan Island launched a major attack at dawn today on a four-mile front. The Japanese were strongly entrenched among ridges and in swamps, but were weak in the air. and lacked sea support. The Americans stormed forward over rough country and on some sectors advanced as fast as a mile en hour. The attack is proceeding. A correspondent on board the U.S. flagship says that after a week of complicated manoeuvring it has become very clear that the Japanese intend to avoid a major fleet action. A Pacific Fleet communique states: “Navy Venturas bombed Shumushu before dawn last Saturday, starting fires near the airfield. Navy Venturas and Army Liberators bombed Paramushiru before dawn on Monday. Army Liberators made a daylight attack on Monday on Truk atoll. Liberators and Mitchells bombed Ponape and other aircraft struck at Milli, Maloelap and Wotje.
