Mr. Hollands To Leave Hutt

Valley Power Board . The Hutt Valley Electric Power Board has been notified by Mr. E. F. Hollands, engineer and general manager, of his intention to retire from the board’s service six months .from the end of this month. Sir. Holands, who has occupied the position for nearly 15 years, has made this decision on medical advice. The board received the intimation yesterday, expressing its regret and deciding ■ that applications for the position be invited by advertisement.

Mr. Hollands was appointed to his position with the board in October, 1929, his previous position being manager of the Timaru municipal electricity department. He was born at Tunbridge Wells, Kent, England, In 1886 and was trained as an electrical engineer in England. Believing that there were greater opportunities for advancement abroad, he went to South Africa as a young man. After working tor the South African Government for two years, he wag appointed chief electrician with the Pretoria ‘Portland Cement Company. He was engineer and manager for Hubert Davis and Co., Pretoria, when he resigned! to give war service. He arrived in New Zealand in 1916 with his wife and two sens, and was employed by the Public Works Department on the Lake Coleridge scheme. The department released him to supervise work at Portland for the Dominion Cement Company, and on the completion of that he was appointed electrical engineer to the ‘borough of Stratford. After three years there he took charge for Turnbull and Jones Ltd. of several large contracts, ineluding the complete electrification of Palmerston North borough, which took 18 months and cost £120,000. During his three years at Timaru the borough’s electrical undertaking was reorganized. Mr. Hollands is a member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, England, a member of the Institute of Electrical Engineers, South Africa, an associate member of the New Zealand Society of Civil Engineers, and a registered electrical engineer of New Zealand.
