Applicants Total 33,668

Applications for State rental houses and flats unsatisfied at the end of May are shown to total 33,668 in the latest returns compiled by the Rehabilitation Department. Civilian applications numbered 30,491, and those by ex-servicemen 3177. State dwellings or flats allocated -to returned servicemen, widows of deceased servicemen and wives of prisoners-of-war servicemen at May 31 totalled 1586, the allocation for that month being 83. The Wellington allocations to tenants in this category totalled 490, and those for Auckland 486. Christchurch had the next largest number of allocations with 182, 'and then came Hamilton with 124. Wellington and Auckland allocations for May were 36 and 10 respectively. Auckland has the largest number of unsatisfied applications with 13,417 from civilians ant! 1103 from ex-servicemen. The Wellington civilian applications total 10,575, and those from ex-servicemen 1041. Napier applications total 857, of which 742 are civilian and the remaining 115 from ex-servicemen. New Plymouth has 425 civilian applications and 79 by ex-servicemen, and the Nelson applications total 580, of which 509 are from civilians.
