SEAMAN DROWNED
Crowd On Wharf Watches Struggles FALL FROM GANGWAY INTO HARBOUR A drowning occurred in Wellington harbour last evening when a member of the crew of an overseas ship fell into the water. The victim was: —• Mr. David Gillespie, an elderly man, and a quartermaster on the vessel. He was walking up the gangway at about 6.15, when he slipped and fell into the water under the wharf. A crowd assembled and saw him struggling in the water. Hearing the noise of the crowd on the wharf, an officer of the ship came on deck. He saw the man’s plight and immediately dived into the water to assist the man. He held him up till a ladder was lowered from the wharf. Mr. Gillespie was seen to be in a serious condition when brought on’to the wharf. Artificial respiration was applied without success for more than an hour. The Free Ambulance was called and took him to the Wellington Hospital, where he was found to be dead. It is understood that the man was in the water for a considerable time before the crowd realized the seriousness of his position. A few days earlier another member of the crew of the same ship fell 60 feet from a lifeboat he was painting on to the wharf and was killed.
