WOMEN’S HOCKEY

In the Wellington women’s hockey competitions on -Saturday the surprise result was the defeat o£ Hutt United in the senior A grade by the promoted Garrison IV.A A.F. team at Woburn. It was an auspicious debut to the top grade for the W.A.AJjVs, who possess a coiiibiiiatiim which should make a strong bid lor championship honours. The erratic United defence made lite W.A.A.F.’s success more assured. Misses T. Monk, B. .Strang, t'. IViwi ami M. Barnard were United’s mainstays. After a drab opening spell Technical* old Girls won well .against Petone T.O.G. The Technical Old Girls’ forwards and halves, ably supported by the backs, worked in line unison in the second nah, dominating the play. The young Petone team will greatly benefit by the experience gained in I lie higher grade. Miss M. Rutherford, right full back for leelinieal Old Girts, was outstanding in defence, and placed her clearance shots to good advantage. Miss J. Tempest showed herself to be a smart, keen, left wing, wiiose timely circle centres bore success on more than one occasion. She revealed a turn ot good pace down the wing. Others in the team to show to advantage were Misses Janet Mack, centre forward, M. Holden, right wing, and M. Eeles. right halt'- The promoted Base Camp W.A.A.C. team found College Old Girls too experienced and fast to cope with, and though beaten by six goals, performed very well in tile circumstances. This season Wellington possesses in the various grades many outside players who have represented Mairarapa, Wanganui. Horowhcuua. Marlborough aud Canterbury.
