MEN’S HOCKEY

The two leading teams in the Wellington senior men’s hockey competition, Karori and Varsity A, had solid struggles before they maintained their records by wm : ning their matches on Saturday. Karon had the toughest game, against Wellington College, the schoolboys being but one goal behind when the whistle went. The Karori players must have sighed their relief when time was sounded, for 20 minutes previously they had led. by four goals to one, but the college team had all the game in the closing stages and might have drawn or won with a little more 1 luck. Varsity A, beating Air Force, bad a twogoal margin, but again it was the beaten team -which was having the best of the game toward the end. Air Force were favoured by luck, however, in being allowed their last goal, the last Air Force player to touch the 'ball before it entered the net 'being well outside the circle and near -the sideline. Hula, who are close on the heels o" the leading pair, ready to take advantage of any slip hv either, beat Technical Old Boys bv a one-goal margin. They are playing solid hockey, if a little lacking in finesse. College Old Boys registered their fourth draw of the season, this time at the fourgoal level against Trentham Army. Ihey seem to lack just that 'final punch necessary to place them among the leaders. Training College are much better than their record would imply, the two defaults they made because of the vacation hampering them. They beat Varsity B decisively on Saturday. The Varsity second string do not impress as likely to stir very far from the bottom of the table.
