EXCELLENT RESULT
Allied Nations Street Day In Wellington
Allied nationals and their well-wishers took charge of Wellington streets yesterday in the appeal of Allied Nations week. The total collected will not be available till after the weekend, but a preliminary, partial count showed that the result will be excellent. It was a dull, rainy day, 'dot the national costumes of many of the collectors gave a dash of unacustomed colour and, perhaps, coaxed the nimble shilling from the hesitant giver. The Allied nationals of Wellington certainly demonstrated that, like their kinsmen in their home lands, they are prepared to help themselves. Wei- ! lington’s patriotic workers rallied round to make a. strong band, able to occupy all vantage points along the collecting front. The proceeds of yesterday’s appeal, along with those of the rest of the week, will go to assist in relieving distress among Allied nationals.
The mayor, Mr.'Appleton. in two outdoor addresses in support of the appeal, emphasized that those who had not already contributed could do so today. The best appeal he could make was to ask citizens to contrast conditions, in Wellington with those in the countries of the nationals concerned. War had taken many from Wellington families, but the people here had not lived, as bad and did those Allied nationals under the heel of the invader. Bullied, tortured, starved and hunted, they bad never ceased to fight. Every Greek, Pole, Russian, Yugoslav, Netherlander, Czech. Belgian. Chinese. Frenchman and Norwegian who had died in the same struggle as New Zealand’s had helped to halt the Axis menace, and. with the British and Americans, reduce the enemy to the stage where the great, decisive blows of deliverance could be struck. Mr. Appleton then gave five guineas to the day's appeal and £5O to the metropolitan patriotic appeal, on behalt ot the mayoress and himself.
