McMUETRIE, Abel G., Pte.; Oamaru. NAVAL CASUALTIES The following naval casualties were reported yesterday:— ROBERTS, Kenneth S., Temp. bub-Lieut. (1) R.N.Z.N.V.R, killed in an aireralt accident Mrs. G’. E. Roberts, 143 Rlccarton Rd., Christchurch (m) KING, Arthur W.. Ordinary Seaman, died as result of an illness. Mr. W. King, Enderlev Ave., Claudelands, Hamilton ( t) THOMSON, Percy D„ Temp. Sub-Lieut (A) R.N.Z.N.V.R.. missing believed killed Mrs G R. Thomson, Kauri Grove, Kaipara Flats, North Auckland (m) Major C. W. Thomas The death on active service in India of Major Clifford W. Thomas, R.E., has been reported. During the last war Major Thomas served with the Imperial Forces. He was associated with Lawrence of Arabia as a driver in a transport unit. Coming to New Zealand in 1921, he joined the Railways Department as a fitter in the Petone workshops. In 1926 he transferred to the Public Works Department, and Inter became plant inspector attached to the mechanical branch. In 1933 he became inspector of motor vehicles for the Transport Department, and in 14)36 transferred to the head office, Public Works Department. In 1938 he was promoted to the position of technical officer. Air Department, for special duties connected with the Inspection of aircraft, returning to ins former department in map as mechanical plant inspector, head office. He went overseas in 1940 as staff-ser-geant with tbc 19th Army Troop Co., New Zealand Engineers. His devotion to duty and zeal brought him 10. the notice of the British Army authorities, and in 1943 he transferred to the Royal Engineers as a lieutenant, rising to major and being mentioned in dispatches. Tiie late Major Thomas was keenly interested in life-saving, and for many years was an active member of tiie Lyall Bay Surf Life-i Saving Club, both on the active and administrative sides. He leaves a widow ami two sons, who live at Trenthaui. '
