JURY’S CONCERN
Crimes By Boys Under State Control (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) / ’GISBORNE. May 23. Concern at the number of crimes committed by boys under the control of the Welfare Department was expressed by the grand jury in a presentment to Mr. Justice Blair in the Supreme Court today. “The grand jury has given considerable time to the question of crifnes by boys under control of the Welfare Department recently in this district, and we suggest that suitable representations be made to the right quarters for a review of the whole position, and that any alteration made should have the full support of the Police Department, to whom the public are indelitfifl for their safety. We feel that the lot of .back-country settlers is hard enough today, specially the womenfolk, without having lads brought iu from other districts and sent without due warning to settlers about their previous weaknesses.”
His Honour promised to submit the rccommendation to the authorities.
