Treatment Of Prisoners In Japan (Received May 23, 11 p.m.) SYDNEY. May 23. The Japanese -are observing international conventions in the general treatment of war prisoners within Japan proper. This assurance comes from the Apostolic Delegate in Japan, Archbishop 1 aul Marella, a copv of whose first report to the Vatican has been received by the Apostolic Delegate for Australia and New Zealand, Archbishop Panico. Archbishop Marella has made many visits to prisoners of war and interment campsHe says; “The difficulties of which prisoners complain arise from the extreme differences that exist between the mentality of the prisoners and the customs and mentality of the Japanese. Generally Speaking, ami particularly from the point of view of food and clothing, prisoners are placed on the same level as the Japanese soldier.”
Tlie ipost insistent requests of prisoners are for news of their families and for reading matter.
