MEN’S HOCKEY

Though Karori beat Air Force by a margin of three goals in their senior hockey match in Wellington on Saturday, the score does not truly reflect the really good showing made by the beaten team. Karori put on four of their total of five goals in the first half-hour, of the game, but thereafter Air Force had the better of things, scoring two goals to Karori’s additional one. Considering Karori's strength on Saturday, specially in the forwards, this form suggests that Air Force will be strong challengers for the championship, as Karori is likely to lose, and indeed will, by next Saturday, several of their star players, who will be moving to other centres by reason of their service responsibilities. Hula’ had a hard struggle to beat Trentham Army by a one-goal margin, and Wellington College Old Boys and Technical Old Boys drew in a match which was marred by one of the Technical players being ordered from the field. Results:— Senior. —Karori 5 (Brown Rowe, Sim and Edwards 1 each), Air Force 2 (Weihim 2); Technical Old Boys 1 (Dick), Wellington College Old Boys 1 (Sowden); Fort Dorset 3 (Jaspers 3), Varsity B 1 (Stacey); Varsity A 8 (Ting 3, Smiler 2, Rae, Nichols, and Gunn, 1 each) Wellington College 5 (Adams 3, Laurenson and Nixon 1 each); Hula 5 (Jackson 4, Muir 1), Trentham Army 4 (Dudley, Bailey, Toobey, and Day, 1 each); Wellington won from Training College bv default. Second.—Varsity B 2, Base Camp 1; Varsity A 0, Eveready 2; Karori 7, Rongotai College 0; Technical College 6, Huia 4. Thirds.—Technical College 1, Wellington College A 0; A.T.C. 5, Huia 3; Air Force 3, Wellington 2; Training College defaulted to Karori; Varsity B defaulted to Wellington College B.

WOMEN’S HOCKEY

The second round of the Wellington women’s hockey grade championship matches was continued on Saturday on heavy fields. In the senior A grade College Old Girls won comfortably against Varsity. Old Girls team has undergone a few changes, Miss J. Riley, the fast left winger, has married, Miss H. Wilson has returned to Milton and Miss E. Mclndoe, right full-back, is on the sick list and may ■not be available for the better part of the season. Miss Littlejohn has been promoted from the senior B division to replace Miss Mclndoe and Mrs. G. Cowan (nee G. Petley) has resumed her position at centre forward. Though beaten by 5 to 2, Varsity was saved a heavier defeat by the clever goalkeeping of Miss M. Baker, who gave a magnificent performance.
