IMPERIALIST DEMANDS
Rebuke By Mr. Sumner Welles (Received May 19, 11.20 p.m.) NEW YORK, May 19. Sharp criticism of imperialistic demands that the United States take permanent possession of Allied buses was voiced by Mr. Sumner Welles in a speech. “Aren't members of the British Commonwealth logically justified in demanding for the very same reasons the very same bases? Is there any valid reason why the Soviet Union shouldn’t demand on the ground that they are needed for her security many of the same Pacific bases which some insist should be retained for the exclusive use of the United States?”
Mr. Welles pointed out that there was no necessity for an imperialistic policy regarding bases if an international organization were established capable of ensuring the security of all nations.
