Though the present Earl of Derby mis won the classic races of the British lurr on many occasions this is only the second time that he has succeeded in the iwo Thousand Guineas, his other winner being Colorado in 1920. Garden Path, this year s winner, is a full sister to Watllng Street, who w.on the Derby for Lord Derby’ In 1942. She had three starts at two years winning the Tostock Stakes at Newmar ket, finishing third to Fair Fame and Fragrant View in the Cheveley Stakes and third to the colts Orestes and Happy Landing in the Middle Park PlatShe was weighted 8.11 In the Free Handicap. 10lb. below the topweigbt. Orestes, and 71b. below Fair Fame, who was rated as the season’s leading two-year-old Ally with only the sex allowance of 31b. between her and Orestes. Ranai, the saw of Garden Path, has proved a wonderful investment for Lord Derby. She was bred In France in 1025. and sold aS a yearling to Lord Derby for 95.000 francs, and for him she won twice and was twice piacea in four starts. She has bred nine foals iu England, and the eight of them tp race to date are all winners. Including tn. Derby winner, Watllng Street and this year's Two Thousand winner. Dark Sedge the dam of Ranai. is by the great stayer Prestige, from Beattie by Volodyovski (son of Florizell II) from La Heine by Rosicrucian. The leading colts in England this season who headed the Free Handicap last term ivere Orestes and Happy Lanning, but there Is no mention in the cablegram whether they were starters. Picture Play, winner of the One Thousand Guineas, was rated at 8.8. 31b. below Garden Path, in the Free Handicap. She ran four times as a two-year-old. winning the Thames Stakes a nd Swallowfleld Stakes at Ascot and was third In the Queen Mary Stakes at Newmarket. In her other start she ran unplaced in tne Cheveley Stakes. Picture Play is Interest to New Zealanders because her dam. Amuse, is from the Phalaris mare Gesture, who was a three-quarter sister by the Derbv winner Sunstar to Absurd, who distinguished himself as a sire at the Koatanui. Stud. Picture Play’s sire. Denied 1 ’ 11, is a son of the Derby winner B'enke'™, sire of Whlrlaway. the world stake ’eco™ holder.
