LESS THAN EXPECTED
U.S. War Expenditure
(Received May T 7, 11 p.m.) WASHINGTON, May 17. President Roosevelt disclosed at a Press conference that actual requests to Congress for appropriations for war expenditure were 8000 million dollars less than the original Budget * st ’ mat:e ® oa o J 90,500 millions. He emphasized that Jb.o per cent, of the Budget was earmarked for army, navy, war shipping and lendlease. The remaining 1.4 per cent, was all that was needed for all emergency war agencies and war activities and the regular Federal agencies. The President said that operational losses on land, sea and air were less than anticipated. For example, far fewer merchantmen had been suiu and artillery iu action proved more long-lived than anticipated.
