Wellington’s Good Start

The Wellington metropolitan patriotic appeal has made a good start. Of the quota of £BB,OOO, said Mr. V Ward, M.L.C., honorary secretary of the, committee. last night, £17,240 had already been received and substantial amounts had been promised. Air Force Comforts Day will be held tomorrow. The band of the Royal New Zealand Air Force will parade through the city and will ali*> give selections at Liberty Corner, where, at 1 p.m., there will be an address by the mayor, Mr. Hislop. Arrangements have been made for bombers and fighters to fly over the city during the lunch hour At a meeting of the Wellington Provincial Patriotic Council yesterday, it was decided to contribute £250 from the welfare funds to the Disabled Servicemen’s Re-establishment League, toward the cost of providing a bowling green .at the vocational training centre for service personnel in Wellington. Appreciative reference was made to the work of Mr. Hislop and Mrs. Hislop in the patriotic effort, and also to the work of Mr. T. Jordan, who is not Contesting the Masterton mayoralty on this occasion. Mr. Ward said last night that a considerable amount of additional office work was involved in this year’s patriotic campaign rind that he would be glad of extra assistance. He suggested that possibly the wife of a serviceman who was able to use a typewriter might be willing to take up such work.
