SCIENTIFIC AWARDS
Royal Society Of New Zealand The Royal Society of New Zealand, at its annual meeting in Wellington yesterday. awarded the Hector Medal for work in ethnology to Mr. Johannes Andersen, M.8.E.. Wellington. The Hutton award went, to Dr. W. N. Benson. F.R.S., F.R.S.N.Z., Dunedin, for research in New Zealand geology. Mrs. Lucy May Smith (nee Cranwell), botanist, of Auckland, and Mr. F. T. Seelye. chief chemist. Dominion Laboratory, Wellington were elected to fellowship of the society. „ , Dr. Lelland .0. Howard and Professor R. A. Millikan were elected honorary members. , ~ „ , .. Dr. Howard has been chief of the United States Bureau of Entomology, Washington, for 35 years and permanent secretary of the American Association for the Advancement of Science for 22 years. His intimate association with the subject is revealed in his “History of Applied Entomology,” published in 1930. In this, approximately 1400 entomologists and their work are dealt with, and he was personally acquainted with most of these men. Many of his activities have been of the greatest service to mankind: and of these two campaigns are outstanding —tlie mosquito and house-fly crusades, of which ho was the international leader. Professor Millikan is a physicist attached to the California Institute of Technology and has held positions on many scientific societies. Among his numerous awards are: Edison iMedal of American Institute of Electrical Engineers (1922). Nobel Prize in Physics and Hughes Medal, Royal Societv of Great Britain (1923). Faradav Medal of Chemical Society of. Great Britain (1924), gold medal of arts and sciences for work on cosmic rays (1929). He is the author of many books and papers.
