ALLEGED ATTEMPTED MURDER

Wellington Woman Charged SOLDIER’S CONDITION SERIOUS , Arrested on Monday, Mary Stuart Walker, a married woman aged about d( years, appeared before Mr. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrates’ Court, Wellington, yesterday on the charge of attempting. at Wellington on May 4, to murder Richard Townsend Chorley. Chorley was admitted to Wellington Hospital that day with a .22 bullet wound in the abdomen, having been taken there from 74 Daniel Street, Newtown. . . When accused appeared in Court yesterday an application was made by De-tective-Sergeant Thompson, on behalf ot the police, for a remand to May -4. air. W. J. Stacey appeared for accused. , Detective-Sergeant Thompson said he understood an application was to be made for bail. “The condition of the man in hospital is serious and critical, he said, “and it may be necessary for accused to be taken there at any moment to be present when depositions are taken. The man was shot in the abdomen and the bullet is still there.” The police therefore opposed the granting of bail, which was not customary in such cases. Mr. Stacey said accused was well, known in the citv anil possessed considerable property. There would be no difficulty in obtaining substantial security for her. An undertaking could be given that she won d remain at her residence and be available at any time to go to the hospital. It depositions had to be taken counsel would have to be notified, and there would be plenty of time for accused' to be taken there also. . , , , , Granting the remahd asked for and refusing bail, Mr. Stout said that to grant bail would be unusual in such a charge. If the man became out of danger accused could be brought before, the Court and the position reconsidered.
