OCCUPATION POLICY
NEW YORK, May 16. The Assistant-Secretary of War, Mt. John McCloy, disclosed at a Press conference that France and other friendly nations will receive less strict military governorship that) Italy, says the “New York Times” Washington correspondent. Mr. MeClOy also hinted cautiously tha' the Frenchmen, possibly through the de Gaulle Committee, may be given considerable latitude in self-government.. The Vichy supporters and collaborationists will be eliminated. Firm rule is planned for Germany, including the forced use of German labour if necessary in the early stages and alsoi measures to stamp out the effects of Nazi indoctrination and to cope with an expected' German underground movement, which dated back to the Ruhr occupation after the last war. . . . ~ , Discussing Soviet participation in ruling liberated countries, Mr. McCloy said that Russia was actively participating in the advisory council for Italy, and. was co-operating with Britain and America in considering the terms of surrender for Germany. ■ . , He'added that plans were being formulated for governing the occupied Pacific territories, and possibly Japan, but details could not be discussed at present.
