Last Year’s Winner Of G.N. Steeples
(By
St. Simon.)
The Siegfried mare Chat, winner of last year’s Great Northern Steeplechase, is due to leave Wellington today by sea for Auckland to take part a-t the Auckland Racing Club’s winter meeting, which opens in three weeks’ time. Chat has not raced in public since she split the stablemates, AiNflo-Erench and Noko, in the Lincoln Steeplechase at Riccarton last August.
Stable Clmngcs. Instead of having Ins team divided between two trainers at Hastings and Lrentham. Mr. P. Louis has now placed all his horses under the care of 11. 'leltord excepting Sandy Cape, who is to retert to hurdle racing shortly, and for that reason has been given to C. J. Thomson to prepare at Awapunl. Sandy Cape won a hurdle race early in the season, but in the meantime has been competing on the flat where he has not proved capable of winning. though he has 'been placed several times.
Slightly Injured. , , „ _ Anglo-Irish was not produced for the steeplechase at Otaki because he suftered a slight injury in a schooling task at Awapuni last week when taking off too far at a fence and striking the obstacle with his shoulder. Sixth Win For Season. Lady Spiral is proving a good advertisement for the Dominion-bred sire Spiral, for she scored her sixth win for the current season at Otaki on Saturday, and she has also earned place-money on six other occasions. As a three-year-old last season she won three races and was six times placed, so she has been a good investment for her owner, Miss J. L. Flower. Palmerston North. Lady Spiral’s dam, Mislaid, now in Australia, •is a half-sister to the dual Sydney Cup winner Mosaic, who is now doing stud work in New’ 'South Wales ana whose yearlings sold for good prices at the Easter sales. .Spiral w’as a classic winner and w T as by Limond from Drax by Spearmint.
Mixed Fortunes. . , z. t Saturday was a day of mixed fortunes for the Otaki owner, Mr. D. W. Debreceny. He won the first maiden race with 1 alanui. a three-year-old half-sister by Man s Pal to Superex, and was very unlucky not to win the concluding event with the same horse who finished third. In the meantime Latin Bay broke a shoulder while running in the race for apprentice riders, and Rockanui, who is raced in partnership with a brother, fell near the finish of the second maiden race.
Career Cut Short. Latin Bay. a three-year-old by Phaleron Bay, was showing promising form this season. He won at New Year, w®s placed at his two starts prior to his fatal accident on Saturday, and through Omahiuas form at Feliding he appeared likely to do well. He was going very easily when he fell on Saturday, and probably would have taken part In the finish. His dam. Latin Lady, was an Australian-bred mare by Windbag from Pecunia. the dam of Blue Border.
Winner by Two-year-old. Aioutoa Lad, winner of one of the maiden events at Otaki, is undersized, but has plenty of pace. ‘His sire is North Island, an unraced son of Bulandshar and Fairfax, and his dam. Black .Tane by Royal Divorce from Moutoa Treasury, dam of Afoutoa Bond. North Island was two years old when he sired Moutoa Lad.
Likelv to Improve. , , , Sir Raleigh, one of the horses which fell at the finish of the second maiden race at Otaki, gave a very good showing considering that it was bis first racejn public He was with the leaders all the way, but was not seasoned enough to run out the six furlongs. Sir Raleigh is a typical Defoe gelding from Tawene, a Martarma mare bred by Mr. John Porter. sir Raleigh was bred by Mr. N. Clout. Levin, who races him. Narrow Defeat. Cramond Bay made his first appearance on Saturday in the colours of Mr. R. B. Jollands and he failed narrowly to give the new owner a win at his first attempt. Cramond Bay has had only five races to date and has run two seconds. He may not be long Improving on his weekend performance.
Jumpers on the Flat. Two prominent jumpers raced well on the flat at Otaki. These were Kanul te Pai. who contested the main handicap, and Moderate, who ran in the principal sprint. Both horses look in good order for the winter campaign, but how far they will get afield for the big jumping races depends upon transport. ,
First in Open Class. When Foxeatcher won the Huia Handicap at Otaki she gave W. J. Bromby s stable an overdue turn. It was her h rst success since she graduated from the hack division at Trentham last October. Foxcatcher is partial to easy going and she found the track to her liking on Saturday. She has not taken on much condition during her spell, but looks in good order, and she beat her field comfortably. A Doubtful Leg. Te Kawiti won at his first start as a hurdler at Feilding at Easter in promising style, but he has not been produced lu this role since on account of a doubtful leg, which he was favouring after running second to Lady Spiral at Otaki.
First for Four Years. Though the class of his opponents was poor. Malik Kafur can be credited with an encouraging performance in winning his first jumping race at Otaki on Saturday, as it was his first appearance in pubde since the Wellington Cup ineet.ng in January, 1940. He was bought’as “yearling In Sydney by Mr. 11. Bayly, Westmere, who won an Auckland Cup with The Buzzer, and was not seriously tried till his three-year-old season when in nine starts he won a trial at Wanganui ana haek stavers’ race at Feilding. and wa placed on two other occasions. Slaiir. Kafur is soundly bred. His sire, loxearth. is by Foxlaw from a Hurry On mare who was a half-sister to Weathervane. His dam, Delhi Queen, is by Syce from a Grafton mare descending from Nonsense, a sister to Disowned and Oudeis. both Winners of the New Zealand Derby. Duroclvdon. Ladv Gertrude, Trenton, Beauford Waimea. Nightmarch and Silver Scorn were other well-performed members of the same family. Langue d’Or Withdrawn. Langue d’Or was the ruling pre-post favourite for the Raukawa Handicap a. Otaki.' which was to have been his first race in open company. He did not do well toward the end of last week due to some dental disorder, and was taken out of the race at 12.10 p.ra. on Thursday. May 11. Te Arolia Novice Winners. Pink Shell and Fine Kin, winners of the divided novice races at the Poverty Bay meeting at To Aroha. wore both bred on the East Coast. Pink Shell is a four-year-old chestnut mdre by St. Boswells from Conchita, dam of Jonrnet and Golden Chant. She was bred by Mr. F. Osmond at Karamii. and is raced by Mr. C. K. Powell. Fine Kin is a four-year-old bay mare by Kincardine from Fine Stltcli. dam of Many Stitches, and was bred at Gisborne by Messrs. L. J. and R. M. Card. She is raced by Mr. J. P. McSweency.
Killer’s First Successes. „ The successful flat rider, W. Ensor, scored his first win over hurdles on Spring Day at Te Aroha, and later in the day he scored also nn Gold Cape in the open hurdles. Both horses are trained at Matamata by R. H. Martin.
Very Easy Win. , Though the official margin of Salmis win at Te Aroha was a neck, observers ot the race state that she won very easily and the margin could have been much greater hail she not been eased down >n the last furlong. Graduation to open company is not likely to stop this mare from winning again, for she is much above the average as a galloper.
