CLUB PATRON’S TALK

The third meeting of the French Club, Wellington, for 1944 was held recently under the direction of Miss F. Huntington and Miss Margaret McLay. The club patron. Monsieur de la Tribouille. gave an interesting talk on the temples of Cambodia, in French Indo-China. Musical items were contributed by Miss Loretto Cunningham, pianist, and Mrs. Bryant, who sang two French songs. Three oneact plays were performed and a recitation was given by Lilian Arnaud, a dance by Diane Henderson and a. dance by the Misses Coralie Smythson. Frances Muter. Dorothy Key, Margaret McLay. and Mrs. L. Henderson completed the programme. The accompanists were Mr. A. Bryant for the vocal items and Madame Betts-Vin-cent for the dances. The plays were “Tine Nuit d’Alerte.” by Max Regnier, presented by Mrs. P. Jeffries. Professor Boyd-Wilson and Professor Milos. “Theodore ehcrche des allnmettos.” by Courteline. presented by Dr. N. Dani’low and Messrs. Thom and Whiteman, and “Odette depeche-toi presented by Mr. and Mrs. P. Maeaskill. The hostess for the evening was Madame Armand.

Reports that the Duchess of Gloucester vill include sonic long frocks for public occasions in her wardrobe which she is bringing to Australia have caused concern in social circles, says the Melbourne “Age.” While evening gowns and dinner frocks in England are rationed, they may still be purchased, but in Australia, by Government, ruling in 1942. long frocks have been included in the austerity campaign. and are not allowed to be manufactured except for bridal wear. Stocks in leading city shops have been exhausted.
