Eighth Army Following Up Enemy LONDON, May 10. The Allied troops pushing forward across the slopes of the Apennines close behind the retreating German Tenth Army are making new advances round Monte Maiella, says Reuter’s correspondent at Allied headquarters in Italy. Since the beginning of the advance last Saturday the Allies have occupied 50 square miles of mountain country, includiilg a number of important heights. In addition to occupying the village of Palena, they took possession of the town of Gamberale and the village of Fallascosa, and also occupied a number of high points between Palena and San Angelo. The Allies are maikng a triple thrust into the mountain sector only a few miles east of Field Marshal Kesselring’s mnin supply route through Sulniona. The Germans’ withdrawal is believed to have been forced on them by Allied successes in recent weeks. Enemy mortars have been active north; west of'Cassino, causing Allied casualties. , . Enemy patrols in the Adriatic sector are probing an area two mill’s east of Tollo. where the Germans were forced to withdraw after a clash in which they suffered casualties. Artillery has been active on the Garigliano and in.the Anzio beach-head. Bad visibility yesterday restricted air operations, but medium bombers attacked the Incisu railroad bridge and viaduct, 12 miles south-east of Florence, with good results. Light bombers and fighter- • bombers were fairly active. They attacked supply dumps, roads, and railway tracks in the Rome area, and also hit docks at Civitavecchia. Night bombers attacked Genoa and Leghorn. Eight bombers are missing from all these operations. The Mediterranean air force flew approximately 1100 sorties.
