REQUEST DECLINED

A recommendation from the by-laws committee that an' application for permission to use a 14 h.p. car for taxi work be not approved was endorsed by the Wellington City Council yesterday. Cr. Al. F. Luekie said there was a standard set. for the type, of taxis. 'To vary this would react unfavourably on the bigger taxis. . 1 The call was for a greater service and it might be advisable to vary the policy, said Cr. W. J. Gaudin. Cr. R. H. Nimmo said he considered the hilly nature of Wellington, would, cause danger so far as small taxis were concerned. Cr. J. D. Sievwright.: These people cannot get sufficient petrol at present. Cr. Luekie: It is more than adequate. The mayor, Air. Hislop, disagreed with Cr. Nimmo on the question of danger on hills. He felt that if such cars were suitable and they could do twice the mileage on the same petrol consumption then they should be allowed to run. A standard type of car for taxi service had been set. said Cr. R. L. Macalister. Small cars could not climb hills as well, nor could they carry much luggage. The rirht type of car. could be obtained. Other councillors supported the standard tyne of car for taxi service and the recommendation was adopted.
