MAORI ABSENTEEISM
Absenteeism in the Whakatane district, especially among a certain class ot Maoris, led to officers of the National Service Department visiting hotels, billiards saloons and picture theatres, and 38 persons were questioned. These included five absentees from work and 13 unemployed Maoris who were considered fit. and able to carry out manual labour. The names of the unemployed will be referred back to their tribal committees with a view to directing them to essential work. The leaders of the Maori committee have expressed an earnest wish to cooperate with "the officers. At a special meeting at Taneatua, at which delegates from Whakatane and Ruatoki were present, an associate district committee was set up to deal with all matters in connexion with the Maori labour position in order to make for the fullest utilization of nil available manpower. It will deal direct with the National Service Department regarding the direction of Maori manpower and suggest ways and means of combating the growing absenteeism.
