BEACHED DESTROYER
Torpedoed On French Coast (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY, May 7. Early this morning light coastal forces of the Royal Navy carried out an attack on the Elbing class destroyer which was driven ashore by the Canadian ship Haida after an engagement oft He de Vierge, near Ushant, and subsequently further damaged by the R.A.F. The destroyer was torpedoed amidships and completely destroyed. Shore batteries opened fire on our ships without effect. Yesterday evening and again during last night Beaufighters of the Coastal Command attacked enemy shipping off the Frisian Islands, states an Air Ministry communique. A medium-sized merchant vessel was set on fire and left low in the water. Two medium-sized and two small merchant ships were also damaged and sc: bn fire. Also several escort vessels were attacked and damaged. At night a medium-sized merchant ship was torpedoed off the Norwegian coast. One of our aircraft is missing.
