OBITUARY
Mr. W. R. J. Smythe
The death has occurred of Mr. William Richard John Smythe, Parnell, aged 60. Mr. Smythe joined the A.M.P. Society in 1899. He was manager at Greymouth and Invercargill 'before going to Auckland in the same capacity eight years ago- He was attached to the Weilington office at one period early in his career. Mr. Smythe is survived by his wife and three sons, one of whom is serving in Italy. Mr. Bruce Kelly The death occurred at Napier on Saturday of Mr. Bruce Kelly, a well-known resident of Hastings and Napier and former secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Rabbit Board. The eldest son of Mrs. and the late Mr. George Kelly, he was educated at Wanganui College and Cambridge University. He spent several years in England before returning to New Zealand. He was secretary of the Hawke’s Bay Rabbit Board for a* number of years and ~,. ns >in accountant in Hastings. He served with'the New Zealand forces in the present, war. He was 44 years of age and is survived by his mother, a brother. Mr. S. Kelly, Raukawa, and two married sisters. Mr. William Castle News has been received of the death of Mr. William Castle at Auckland. He was born at Hover, Kent, England, on February 2t), 1.870, and arrived at Wellington with other members of the family in tlie second trip of the British Queen iu 1884. He served his apprenticeship to the printing trade with the late Mr. It. Russell, proprietor of the “Manawatu Herald." at Foxton. Later he returned to Wellington, and was for a number of years employed as a reader at the "New Zealand Times" and “Weekly Herald” office. On the introduction of tlie linotype he joined the staff of the “Evening Post.” where he stayed for some years. He eventually established a business in Auckland, and at one time had five machines setting up type for the trade. Due to indifferent, health, he was compelled to relinquish business some years ago. In early days he was an ardent photographer and a well-known athlete. He was a foundation member of the Melrose Football Club, and a shareholder in the company that formed the Athletic Park in Rintoul Street. As a cyclist he represented Wellington on a number of occasions, winning championship honours in three- and five-mile races. He leaves a widow and one sou, Sapper Brempall Castle (now in Italy), and two sisters, Mrs. Dixon (Sydney). Mrs. Williams (Wadestown). also four brothers, Messrs. John, Fred and George Castle (Wellington) and Mr. Henry Castle (Hastings).
