FOXHAVEN SCORES AT ASHBURTON
Gulf Stream In Sprint
Dominion Special Service. CHRISTCHURCH, May 7. Tho Ashburton County Racing Club Ajas favoured with dull but pleasant wea her for its autumn meeting yesterday and in suite of travel restrictions there nas a wry satisfactory alteadance .- t s t r act ed ouite up to the usual numbers attracted to the club’s meetings when special trains linv? been provided. „ With a small field in the first race, thpool was the smallest for many 3' ears _. and prospects of a successful day as la. as turnover was concerned did not look very bright, but from that onward 3 P t! ®’ J ' lation gradually assumed normal activity and, though many favourites tailed, business was very brisk over the second hall of the programme. The sum of £-7,-41 was handled, against £20,503/10/-. on the corresponding day last year, an of £6740/10/-. This turnover established a record for the club, a remarkable result in the face of many diflicultles. The course was in excellent order and provided fast going.’ . , The* Ashburton Handicap resolved itselt into a contest over the final furlong between Gamble and Foxhaveu. The former went to the front early and, as at Riccarton, attempted to lead throughout, fit did not, however, ever get any appreciable break on the field and was only a length in front of Arctic Dawn and Royal Writ going through the back stretch, witn All Night and Eulogist handy and 1 oxhaven in last place. Gamble still held his lead entering the straight from Arctic Dawn, Royal Writ, Foxhaven and All Night, and when he drew away again starting the run home his success seemed imminent, but Foxhaven quickly drew up to him and the pair settled down to a hard struggle in which Foxhaven always appeared to be doing the better work. Rawhamai, last away, put in some sound work in the straight to beat Arctic Dawn by three lengths for third money, with the remainder strung out. Foxhaven was seen at his best in a solid test and hla success compensated for several misses la recent months. Gamble did well in his first attempt in open company and was responsible for the fast time recorded. Gamble was withdrawn from the Flying Handicap, but All Night, Eiflogist and Rawhamai were again saddled up. John o’ London was sent out a much better favourite than Gulf Stream and was probably unlucky, as Gulf Stream, moving in as the barrier went up, shot to the front in a few strides and with half the journey covered had a big break on John o’ London, which he maintained to the straight, john o’ London then essayed to bridge the gap, but though he reduced it to two lengths, Gulf Stream was never asked a question and had a decisive win. Rex Maitland, third into the straight, held on to that position a length in front of Rawhamai, who beat St. Cloud by a head. Gulf Stream on the day would have taken a power of beating on even terms, but his lucky getaway nevertheless spoilt what was expected to be a closely contested race. This race gave the young Riccarton trainer C. G. Humphries his third success of the day, his previous winners being Maggiore and Silver Sal.
