LAST MATCH AT HAWERA

Success In Steeples ALEXCELIA SUCCEEDS IN MAIN HANDICAP Dominion Special Service. NEW PLMOUTH, May 7. The Egmont Kaclng Club was out of luck with the weather yesterday for its winter meeting, which is generally recognized as the opening of the jumping season. After a week of good weather, the track was in perfect condition till tlie first race, when heavy rain quickly softened it and for the rest of the day it was "reasy. Consequently horses that got away badly had no chance, as the linlshes were confined to quick beginners. The racin» from the spectators’ point of view was robbed of a good deal of interest thelfess, the betting was solid, £.33,765 going through the totalizator, compared witn £38,672/10/- last year, when the fields were biff and conditions were congenial. Two scratchings and a spectacular spill bv Gay Hussar at the second fence left four runners to contest the steeplechase. Last Match, covering plenty of country, led all the way, trailed by Idle Hour, with Mamaku and Mansura out of the running. Last Match and Idle Hour jumped the last two obstacles practically together in an obliterating downpour, and in the run home Last Match, whose bold jumping was the bright patch of the race, outstayed Idle Hour to win by four lengths. Well back came) Mamaku and the tiring ManSU BUck Plato, who won the °P en , B ®J® n furlongs earlier, was backed to short odds to complete the double in the Mcßae Ha - dicap, but was easily beaten by Alexcelia ridden by H. Pearce, who won bis first race when he got Hulabaloo home in the previous event. The sticky going suited Alexcelia, who looked well. She went to the front approaching the straight when Ring Chief dropped out, and led Mountain Fox, Nightray, Black Plato and Keen Play, who was disappointed when going for an opening. Black Plato got through on the rails, but had no chance with Alexcelia. Mountain Fox was a poor third, ahead of Nightray, Keen Play and Rfilack Plato made the field look cheap in the Hawera Handicap, in which a lot of money came for the nicely weighted Jonathan jo, whose chance was extinguished when he knuckled over at the start and lost several lengths. Plato Lad opened up a big gap, but was overhauled at the straight by Black Plato, who went on to six lengths’ win from the hack, Starlet, who was always in second P* ace > an “ held off Plato Lad by a neck. Then came Nightray, Jonathan Jo (finishing fast) and Embroider, who failed to handle the going. The Baffles gelding Hulabaloo, an unlucky runner to date, had a turn of fortune in the Champion Hack Plate, when young Pearce tucked him in behind Radina, and the pair cleared out from a bunched field headed by Our Pat, Cracroft, and Young Jim. Cracroft and Peter’s Choice moved up running for the straight, where Hulabaloo ran wide on to the good going in the middle of the track. In the last 100 yards, Hulabaloo was going away from Peter’s Choice, who nosed Kadlna out of second. Cracroft was a moderate fourth, then Our Pat, Magic Chief, and Broiefort Star. Whero out-jumped and out-stayed a fair hurdles field, leading his etablemate, Park Light, all the way and winning comfortably. Noble Fox bad every chance and Par Avion was very disappointing. Hard Frost, Walpero (at a good nlace ■price) and Man-power were always ini the van and disputed the finish of the Telegraph Hack. Ette Quex finished on for fourth ahead of Dqnegal Boy aud Molly Martia. Derryogue gave a fine performance to lead the juveniles all the way. Mangurakau ran his usual honest race for second. The favourtie, El Tiger, found the distance too short when he had to come from the back. Young Trent made up leeway for fourth. , , , The unreliable Novocaine spreadeagled the field in the Borough Hack, an event for apprentices in which several jockeys had to take mounts because of the shortage of apprentice riders. Cetewayo and Fort Royal were at good place prices. Forest Art, fourth, was slow to move. Dink’s Own was fifth and Chef d’Oeuvre sixth.
