Merchant Navy at War. _ . The April meeting of the Ngaio League of Mothers was presided over by Mrs. B. A. Sargisson. The speaker was the Rev. B. J. Williams, who described the Merchant Navy at war, and what was done by the Mission to Seamen when the men came ashore at Wellington. It was realized that the Merchant Navy was responsible for all troops and supplies going overseas and the mission did its best to make the seamen’s days ashore as happy as possible. During the afternoon songs were sung by Mrs. Christian, and Mrs. Sargisson recited.

Urged to Keep Working. The annual meeting of ttye Manakau branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in April. There was a large attendance of members. Mrs. McLeavey addressed the meeting on general division business and urged members to keep busy working for the good of their valuable organization. Mrs. H. McLeavey, the Dominion treasurer, conducted the election of officers, which resulted as follows: —President, Mrs. A. Bryant (elected unopposed); secretary and treasurer, Mrs. Guy Martin; committee, Mesdames H. Bryant, Bowling, De Simas. Jensen, Mudgway, Cotterill and R. Robinson; vice-presidents. Mesdames Cotterill, De Simas, R. Robinson: advisory members, Mesdames Cottle and Jensen; Press and sick correspondent, Mrs. Dorset. Institute Celebration. The ninth birthday party of the Paekakariki Women’s Institute was held recently, and the birthday cake was cut by Mrs. Bird, a visitor from Plimmerton. The annual meeting of the institute was held a week later, when the following officers were re-clected :—President, Mrs. Stedman; secretary, Mrs. Donald; treasurer. Mrs. F. King. At the April monthly meeting arrangements were made for the holding of the annual conference of the Southern Wellington Federation, which is to take place at Paekakariki in May. Rugs From Felt and Wool. The monthly meeting of the Kangataua Women’s Institute was held recently. Mrs. Slater presiding. A demonstration on rug-making from old felt was given by Mrs. George, and Mrs. White exhibited a rug made from wool. Mrs. Stretton presented commitee members with, shouldersprays and musical items were given by Mesdames Eades, Sullivan and Guscott. The institute motto was read by Mrs. George. The competition for three wholemeal scones was won by Mrs. Francois, Mesdames R. and W. Remus, equal, 2. Pioneer Club Programme. The monthly meeting of the Pioneer Club centre of (he Women’s Institutes was recently held in the club lounge, Wellington, the president, Mrs. M. Lundins, presiding over a good attendance. An attractive musical programme arranged by Misses F. and M. IMx was presented. Assisting artists were : Miss M. Atkinson, contralto: Mrs. D. McKenzie, ’cello; Miss S. Anderson, violin. Elocutionary items were given by the Misses Dix and the accompanist was Miss Norah Gray.
