PENICILLIN MADE IN AUSTRALIA

(Received May 7, 11.45 p.m.) MELBOURNE, May 7. Australia is now producing all the penicillin required for the treatment of battle casualties in this theatre of war. In the past supplies of penicillin for the •South-west Pacific have been obtained from America. Announcing that penicillin is being produced at the Commonwealth serum laboratories administered by the Commonwealth Department of Health, the Acting-Army Minister, Senator Fraser, said he did not think it desirable that the “production of such a valuable and financially-profitable remedy should pass beyond the complete control of the Government.”

Hospitals and private . practitioners cannot obtain penicillin except in cases where all other methods of treatment have been tried without success, and the use of penicillin is the lust resort. No objection is taken to these . safeguards, which the doctors describe'as a “good rule in view of the present acute shortage.”
