WORK AT TRENTHAM

Tracks Recovering From Winter Soaking (By St. Simon.)

For the flrat time for several luouths track work at Trentham was perlornieu yesterday under good conditions, inert, was a light frost, but this quickly disappeared after sunrise. The tracks aie iecovering rapidly from the soaking have received during the past three mcntiis and are now dry on top. If the nne weather continues the track will be lu perieet order for the spring meeting. . The older horses worked on the middle of the trial grass and the. two-year-old track near- the rail was available tor inc juveniles. . „,, It was a fairly quiet morning na not many visitors have arrived so far. G. w. New with a team of 10, J. McLean, with Glenfalloch and Greenfeast, and C. Smytli with Fiddler’s Green and Lastik, came on from Masterton at the weekend, and ar rlv j ais yesterday morning from Auclilanu were Beau Vaals, Balfron and My Bonnie (F. Smith), Phaleron (R. S. Bagby), \a Fillette and Peter Gregor (W. Clllton), and Foxlore (R. George). Nawab s failure to make the trip was due to his having contracted a cold since winning the Auckland Welcome Stakes. There was little of an outstanding nature among yesterday’s trials. Over unit a mile, Dungloe ran 51; Daljarrock, 51 2-.>, when giving the maiden Beech Hili a good start: Master Dash (going easily) and Aoltaire, 51 2-5; Tara King and Maharajah, the last three of half a mile in 38; and Typhoon and Foxcntclier. both moving easily. 53 2-5. Cramond Bay, who has been elf colour lately, beat the maiden Bonnieve, in 52. Cramond Bay appeared tied up after the gallop and he may not run on Saturday. The maiden, Lord Darnley, who ran a good race at Masterton on Saturday, ran an easy half, the last three in 10 2-5: and Killeymoon, always a free worker, was speeded up the last bit of his half-mile to break 52. Madame Rachel ran five furlongs alone In 1.4, and Moutoa Bond strode out strongly’ over the same distance. This mare’s condition has improved since she last raced. The Otakl winner Caithness was going easily alongside Siglow at the end of six furlongs in 1.18, and Foxella finished ■ in front of Lord Brolefort over the same distance in 1.10. Lord Brolefort was giving away considerable weight and ran about a good deal in the lasi furlong. Genghiz Khan .shaded Galteemore over six, the last half taking 55. Glenfalloch ran on well at the end of seven furlongs with Crucible in 1.34. Both of these ’Wellington Handicap candidates look well, specially Glenfalloch, who is in nice order after his winning performances at Hastings and Masterton. The free-going Water Hound worked alone over seven furlongs and ran 1.34 2-5. He could have improved on the time, but was eased up nearing the post. Nightray, The Monarch and Piastre had Kindergarten as a companion over a mile. The champion trailed the other three till the half-mile, where he moved round them on the outside to take the lead, and though working well within himself, draw out to win the gallon by five lengths from Nightray, who was three lengths clear of The Monarch and Piastre. The time for the mile was 1.46, Kindergarten's last half taking 52. With Kindergarten out of the way It was a good trial on the part of Nightray. who failed narrowly to Glenfalloch in her last start at Masterton.

Gladynev and Don Quex ran from the mile and a quarter to the half-mile at three-quarter pace, and came the last four furlongs In 31. They both worked well, particularly Gladynev, who is nearing racing condition.

Kaitoa was travelling easily beside the maiden Aspen when running seven furlongs in 1.32 2-5, the last half in 52 2-5.

Tavern Light and Solver worked a mile, ■with the pace on for the last half, in 52 2-5, On the two-year-old track Bridge Acre and the Foxbridge—Astarth filly, who is to be named Alcyone, ran half a mile in 51. Others of this age to work well in short tasks were Iloodild, Theiollght, Black Simon, Sunstream and Jannic Girl.

Sanction and Tamakaha were cent over the schooling hurdles, the last-named jumping well for a novice.
