LABOUR DAY
Observance As A Normal Holiday
WORK LIKELY IN CERTAIN INDUSTRIES
Labour Day, which falls on Monthly next, is Ho be observed as a normal holiday, announced lhe Minister of Labour, Mr. Webb, aud the Minister of Supply, .Mr. Sullivan, in a joint statement issued last night. They .said that in certain industrial operations, however, it might be necessary for reasons “of supply to require that work be performed on Labour Day. These would be the subject matter of individual 'direction to employers by the responsible controller, Where work was thus performed, such special rates of pay as were prescribed would operate. “The decision to allow the day as a normal holiday is one that will be welcomed by thousands of workers aud employers alike,” said the Ministers. “Maintenance of the supply position lias involved continued effort on the part of lite persons working in the industries concerned, turd it is expected that any loss of output on that day will be fully made up as a result of the recuperative value of the well-earned break from work.”
