DIFFICULT TERRAIN
Allied Progress Toward Rome LONDON. October 17. A picture of the territory in which the Fifth Army is operating was given by Reuter’s correspondent on the Volturno front: “Across the coastal plain the steep Mount Massico bounds the horizon northward, with the Cajazzo ridges to the north-east, the Volturno River to the south, and the sen to the west. Those bold geographical features bound 100 square miles of difficult terrain through which the Allied troops are progressing to Rome. This plain is difficult for tanks. Dikes which intersect it shelter dozens of enemy machinegun posts, and tanks tackling the machineguns become ideal targets for mortar 'batteries.
