TO CONSERVE COAL
Measures In Australia (Received October 18, 11.35 p.m.) ■SYDNEY, October 18. From next Monday housewives will be asked to reduce gas consumption by -0 per cent. They will be put on their honour to cut consumption in preference to an hour’s ration system. Industrial users are to reduce consumption by 124 per cent. Other plans to reduce coal consumption include a reduction in street lighting and interior shop lighting. The Federal Government is considering the use ot Civil Construction Corps manpower to operate open cuts to maintain coal supplies. It is pointed out that open cuts would not require skilled operatives.
