Late News NEW LANDINGS BY ALLIES
Reports From Italy
(By* Telegraph.—Press Assn.—Copyright.) (Received October 18, 1.45 a.m.) LONDON, October 17. Palermo radio reported that early this morning new Allied! landings were made north of the Volturno River. It also stated that the main forces of the Fifth Army have established more bridgeheads over the Volturno. Algiers radio says that several Allied' infantry divisions and one tank division are across the Volturno. The communique from Italy this morning says that the Germans on the Volturno front have been'forced back from the majority of their positions and further bridges are being thrown across the river. Troops and supplies are passing across in large numbers. A correspondent says that the troops of the Eighth Army are. established along a canal three miles beyond the Volturno River. To the east of the Volturno our troops have made some advance in the hills with the result that some bodies of Germans still holding their original positions on the river are being subjected to a heavy enfilading fire which is likely to force them to retreat and straighten their line. The correspondent says that the Germans are fighting desperately all along the line, trying to stave off the moment when they will be forced to make a major retreat. That moment is certain to come and is likely to come soon. This will be largely through the advance of our troops in the centre of the island where : they are pushing on toward Isernia. j ■ Naval forces continue to be active on both coasts and last night two enemy vessels were sunk in the five mile channel between Elba and the mainland.
