It would Ibe absurd to suggest that defendant had taken any reasonable,steps to see that the provisions of the Licensing Act and Licensing Regulations were complied with, and the fact that two barmen saw fit to supply boys under 21 is a serious reflection on the conduct of the hotel." said Mr. H. W. Bundle, S.M., when Leslie Charles Alyco, licensee of the Empire Hotel, pleaded guilty in the Magistrates' Court to charges of supplying liquor to persons under 21 years. The barmen, Joseph Henry Ishcrwood and James Pollock, each pleaded guilty to charges of supplying liquor to persons under 21 and I’olloek to a further charge of supplying liquor after hours. Senior-Serireaut Black stated \that on September IS a youth aged 18 went to tiie public bar of the hotel, where ne bought and consumed a glass of beer, which was served by Ishcrwood. The same evening he returned to the hotel and hud more drink, being joined by two other lads of IT and 16, the last-mentioned being a high school boy, who also had a drink. The first youth then staked the licensee for four bottles of beer, and these were supplied. The three boys left the hotel at 8.20 p.m. and roamed round tho streets, drinking the beer. Then the first vouth assaulted a man and stole £2 from him. He had since been dealt with by tho U At.veo was fined £3O and costs (16/-) on the first charge and £2,and costs (10/-1 on the second. I’ullock was lined £l5 and costs (10/-) for supplying liquor after hours and £2 and costs (10/- on the other charge. Isherwood was fined £5 and costa AlO/-), .
