HAWKE’S BAY TEAM AT MASTERTON
Dominion Speciai Service. HASTINGS, October 14. . Twenty-four horses will represent this training quarter at Masterton this week and will continue on to race at Trentham. The maiden candidates Joseph Conrad and Ozel have been galloping -well enough for this class. Ozel’s recent public outings nre the better and she is expected this time to go very close to breaking her maiden status. Crispin, who has shown speed over short distances, is now being tried over 10 furlongs in the hlghweight with Ashley Jenkins riding. He is fit, 'but the distance and long straight may find him out. The only Hawke's Bay juvenile accepting is the 'Wellington-owned Laurium, who is suffering from a cold and is an unlikely starter.
Glenfallocli, who won the Spring Handicap at Hastings recently, has benefited by that race and should strip even better on Saturday. In the same race are Fiddler's Green, who is infinitely better on a yielding track, and Crucible, who lyjs been placed in her four starts this season. Five throe-year-olds in Barrosa, La Serena, Itoyal Heir, iMr. Valiant, and Magnus Lux. have left here to compete in the hack spring. The first two will be bracketed. Barrosa. who has been working better, is expected to show improvement, on her recent. Hastings fifth. Royal Heir, from outward appearances, does not appear to have recovered from his two Guineas races at Ellerslie, and Maftoii. Mr. Viiliilnt’S connexions fully expect him to return to last autumn’s winning forrtl in the Immediate future. Magnus Lux has done very little fast work sinco racing at the XVanganui meeting last month.
Poufataii is the best of the local sprinters. but he has been rather disappointing in recent track exploits. Lenafdo’s winning chances would be enhanced if the track is soft. Cheap Lodging has been very disappointing since winning last Now Year, but her condition Is hard to fault. Lastik. Greenfeast (unlucky at Hastings), and Carnforth, would be preferred to her. Carnforth Is to start in the Wellington Guineas next week, but if the track at Mnsterton is firm Hastings will solidly support Lastik. who may prefer this race to the concluding event.
