Council Chambers Entered (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) AUCKLAND, October 14. Presentation "wallets for servicemen were opened and the money they contained was stolen by burglars who entered the Mount Albert Borough council Chambers last night. The thieves took about £lOO in cash, including ±lB in public gift money from wallets and elsewhere and about £5O in unnegotiable cheques. Entrance was gained by jemmying open a window on the ground floor. l.he thieves made their way through the public office section to the strong room, forced the door with an explosive charge and then used more explosives for opening the safe inside. Toilet soap and toothpaste were taken from the womens staff room to plug the charges and overcoats from nearby hooks were used to muffle the sound of the explosions. Everything done bore the stamp of “professionals.” , , r j Though they ransacked the safe and the servicemen’s wallets. . the missed an envelope containing a further £l5 in gift money which had been placed in a bottom drawer. This and the £lB in gift money taken had been contributed by citizens to a fund which the council uses for making presentations to local men before they leave for active service.
