GALE SWEEPS AUCKLAND

AUCKLAND, October 14. Auckland was swept by a howling gale last night. In some suburbs fences were spreadeagled, trees were brought down, and a number of windows of houses, also two plate-glass windows, were broken. Much damage was done to gardens. A tree was blown across the main trunk railway line between Pokeno and Mercer, and delayed traffic for a considerable time. The first Wellington express arrived an hour and a half behind time.
