GREAT ADVANCES IN LAST FEW YEARS
Cancer Research Now On Two Defined Lines There had (been great advances in cancer research in the last few years, and it had crystallized itself along two very definite lines, said Frofessor DAth, ot the Medical School, Otago University, at a meeting in Wellington yesterday ot the British Empire Cancer Campaign Society (New Zealand branch). The 'first line was “what is making the normal ce I tend toward cancer,” and the second, “'what makes cancer grow in those people with a tendency to cancer. _ 1. reviously research workers were groping in ‘be dark; now they had these two defined channels in which Jo work. The president, Sir James Nlliott, s.uU that the (branch could not give up c ® ,,c e r research. Its technician, Mr. \\. Mali, was doing good work at tlie cancer research laboratory at the medical school, while the research officer. Dr. A. M. Begg, was on loan to the (Royal -Army Medical Corps and working on typhus research under Dr. Gye, at the Imperial Cancer ■lnstitute at Hampstead. Dr. Gye was one of the leading authorities on cancer research. Sir James added that he favoured more individual research. _ Colonel (Sir Hugh Acland. Christchurch. asked whether all divisions ot the society in New Zealand favoured cancer research as it had' ’been carried out at Otago in the past. Quite a number of interested persons in Canteubury thought that the particular line of research at Otago should not ihe continued. itsked what was tlie alternative, Colonel Acland replied it was that this type of research should be carried ou by Dr. Begg in England. Sir James said (hat a majority ot the central committee in Canterbury favoured continuing at Otago. Professor D’Ath : There is no doubt oi the advisability of that. Tlie committee reaffirmed its opinion as to the desirability of carrying on cancer research work in Ne\v Zealand, and that the question of Dr. Begg’s luture be deferred till tlie end of tlie European war, he to remain on typhus research in England meantime. This decision was later confirmed by the annual meeting.
