Stronger In West

BOMBERS OVER CORFU LONDON, October 12. Today’s communique from the Allied headquarters reports artillery activity and patrolling on both the Fifth and Eighth Army fronts, and says there has been no change in the situation in the past 24 hours. A correspondent says that the patrolling is intense along the whole front, and the artillery exchanges on the Volturno are stronger. Bombers of the North-west African Air Force have attacked, airfields on the islands of Corfu (off the Greek coast), Crete, Rhodes and Kos, and Middle East Liberators also raided Rhodes. ‘■Zero hour for the great battle for Italy seems imminent,” said Algiers radio. Captain Sertorius, on Berlin radio, said that numerous British and American batteries had opened up fire on the German positions on the Volturno River. “General Clark appears to be bringing up masses of artillery, after which an Allied attack on a wide front io force the Volturno River sector can be expected,” he said. The German news agency says that British, and American warships shelled Pescara.
