TINNED BUTTER
Investigation Being Macle
“The whole matter of the tinning of butter for overseas parcels is now under review,” said the Minister of Marketing, Mr. Barclay, when questioned on the subject yesterday. There was considerable correspondence in the Press just lately with regard to the quality of butter arriving in Great - Britain in civilian parcels, and it was decided by the department concerned to hold up the further tinning of butter for use in this way till a full investigation had taken place, so that the Government might be advised as to whether the packing of butter under present conditions in this way and forwarding without refrigeration to people overseas was justified.
“In the meantime, and .so as not' to upset those who had already placed, and in many cases, paid for butter for parcels for overseas, all orders in hand up to the time that the discontinuance was decided upon, are being executed,” said the Minister. “However, it is not at all certain that when the investigations now being carried out are completed, there will be any further tinning of butter authorized for overseas parcels. The present situation would not warrant any waste of such a valuable commodity as butter if the deterioration indicated first by the correspondents mentioned above, and secondly by the investigations of my officers, is anywhere near correct.”
