VOTES OF FORCES

Progress With Official Counts ANOTHER CHANGE IN EDEN Though the official counts of the election votes of the armed forces in New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Canada have been completed, the official returns for the Pacific and the Middle East are not expected till later in the week. In these areas some of the ballot-papers have to come from remote and isolated stations and till they are received by the special returning officers they cannot be officially counted. Another change in the placings of the leading candidates has occurred in the Eden electorate as a result of additions to the figures following the completion of the official counts ot tlie forces’ votes for New Zealand, the United Kingdom and 'Canada. With the completion of tlie official count of the civilian votes and the inclusion of the preliminary service votes, the National Party candidate, LieutenantColonel W. H. Fortune, had a lead of 12 votes over the Labour candidate, Mr. W. T. Anderton. The later figures, however, have reversed their positions and Mr. Anderton now has a lead of 10 votes. The situation has not changed in any of the other electorates where there are slender majorities. In New Plymouth, Mr. E. P. Adenman (National) now has a lead of 71 votes over Mr. F L. Frost (Labour), and in Waiteinata Mr. H. T. Morton (National) a majority of 152 over Mrs. M. M. Dreaver (Labour). Declarations of the result of the poll were mhde yesterday on the basis of the official figures available plus tlie preliminary service votes for the Pacific and the Middle East. All the official counts of civilian votes have now been completed, the last of them yesterday. These are given below, the preliminary forces’ votes in brackets having been added to the official civilian figure.
