DAIRY INDUSTRY
Down In New Zealand; Up Overseas
“We do not see any of the 8000 men whom the Minister of Manpower, Mr. McLagan, says he has released, said Mr. A. Linton, a member of the Dairy Board, when referring to the serious decline in dairy production at the annual meeting of the Federation, of laranalu Co-operative Dairy Factories at ptratford. Mr. Linton explained that tie did not suggest that men had not been released, but that the number was insuflicient to maintain the present productl< Attrihuting the decline in production to the manpower shortage and the fertilizer position, Mr. Linton said that the dairy industry in New Zealand, if it continued to decline at the present rate, would become a minor one . compared with the rate of development in Canada, the United States and Australia, ine use of subsidies made dairying so mucn more lucrative in those countries that the world price would be affected. Canadian cheese had been purchased by Britain at 10jd per lb., or the equivalent of 1/per lb. in New Zealand currency. In Australia subsidies brought butterfat to I/O per lb., in Canada it was about 3/-, and in America 2/7 to 2/8. . “With those prices it is obvious there must be a tremendous increase in production in those countries, which must affect dairy produce prices after the war,’’ said Mr. Linton.
