PACK TACTICS BY U-BOATS

Enemy Determination To Turn Tide LIGHT ALLIED LOSSES (Received October 10, 9.35 p.m.) LONDON, October 9. . In spite of increased U-boat activity at the end of last month, the averagemerchant ship losses from all causes in September and August together are the best on record since the outbreak of the war, says a joint statement issued under the authority of Mr. Churchill and President Roosevelt. Till the third week in September no Allied merchantman had been lost by U-boat attack.

On September 19, the U j boats ended a four-month lull in the North Atlantic when a pack of at least la submarines concentrated on a west-bound convoy. The comlbat lasted for 4J days and the loss of three escort vessels has already been announced. A small number of merchantmen was sunk, but as the result of vigorous counter-attacks by surface and air escorts, a larger number of Üboats was sunk or damaged. > . The resumption of the Back tactics is evidence of the enemy’s intention not to spare auy efforts to turn the tide of the U-boat war.
