FIGHTING CONTINUES AT KOS

British Policy Questioned (Received October 8. 0.25 p.m.) LONDON, October 8. “It was not expected that every. Allied venture would prove successful in the Mediterranean, or elsewhere, but there is no denying that the.state of affairs in the Dodecanese is causing disquiet in the public mind.” says “The Times m an editorial. “The question is 'being asked why the garrison which landed at Kos should not have been stronger than the 1000 men—such is the German estimate —who had to face a strong hostile expeditionary force from Greece. “There was certainly a considerable friendly Italian garrison, but whatever the future value of the Italian forces, they have io undergo a period of recuperation and reorganization before recovering from the moral and material shocks to which they have (ben exposed. The Allies meanwhile would do well to rely strictly on their own strength and their own resources.” Position Obscure.

The position on the island of Kos is still obscure. The Germans claimed that they held the island three days ago. but yesterday they said that fighting was still going on. A Middle East joint war communique states: “Though German forces captured the landing grounds and the town of Kos, resistance by British troops on the island continues. R.A.F. heavy bombers on Tuesday night attacked the airfield at Maritza. Direct hits were scored on one of the hangars, and violent explosions were followed by fires. Bursts were observed in the northern aircraft dispersal area and on the eastern part of the airfield. “An enemy encampment near Kattavia, on the island of Rhodes, was machinegunned. Other bonibtrs attacked the harbour at Syros. hits on the jetty being observed. On tlie same night the airfields at Kasteli and Pediada, iu Crete, were bombed. None of our aircraft is misusing.” Berlin radio yesterday claimed that all strategic points on the island of Kos were firmly in German hands, though about 1000 British troops were still fighting on.
