Source Of Soldiers’ Comforts

Sir, —Your comment in “The Dominion” of October 5, on Brigadier Kippenberger’s statements, regarding welfare work overseas, expresses what is mdeed obvious to many of us when you say, it is disappointing to learn from Brigadier Kippenberger-that many of the men overseas are confused as to the source of( the comforts, looking upon them as a gift ot the various bodies conducting canteens, and recreation huts; rather than as coming out of National Patriotic Funds.. . I have no desire to criticize .or minimize the work of any of the board s expending agents overseas, many of whose servants are personal friends to many of us, and of whose worth and service 1 am aware; but know, as a result of over three vears in the Middle East, the confusion that exists in the minds of the men. I have realized.that this not.only creates scepticism on the v bo ®l d ities such as you are aware of, b it also reacts on organizations such as the one I have the honour to represent, and who were not chosen to be agents of the board overseas, despite our keen desire to co°PAftter having built up a reputation and a confidence for service with the men of the Ist N.Z.E.F., many men today wonder. as do many relatives in New Zealand, why the Salvation Amy has been made conspicuous by its absence, lhe reason is not understood by numbers of people as evidenced by my contacts, both overseas, and since returning to New Zealand. A clear and bold statement, naming the organizations recognized by the NP.F.B. overseas—apart from those in New Zealand—who do represent the board, and outlining their scope and activity. would do much to allay suspicion and ‘create confidence in Board’s effort.—l am, etc.—NORM.. L. BICKNELL, Secretary for War Services, Salvation Army. (Ex-Padre, 2nd. N.Z.E.F.),
