WELLINGTON CHESS

Match Between Allerhand And Wade

A private chess match is being played between Dr. Allerhand and R. G. Wade, the first two games being drawn. Wellington enthusiasts will take consider able interest in the remaining eight games, as these two players shared first place in the last New. Zealand Congress, Dr. Allerhand winning the Dominion title in the play-off. He has enhanced his fine record by recently winning the championship of the Wellington Chess Chib for the fourth year in succession. He scored 8 wins and 1 draw (BJ-4). A. W. Gyles, who came second, was also undefeated, but the 5 draws in his score (6A-2J) left him two points below the leader. Messrs. Beyer, Lepviikmann, Hardy and Severne also scored well. The club appears to have had 14 champions during its 67 years’ existence—Messrs. C. W. Benbow, A. I. Littlejohn, R- JBarnes, AV. E. Mason, A. 0. Davies, W. AV. Mackay, E. A. Hicks, A. AA 7 . Gyles, G. P. Anderson. E. K. Kelling, E. H. Severne, E. J. Dyer, K. Beyer and Dr. P. Allerhand.

The club’s senior B tourney has been won by R. S. Kent who takes tbe bakelite chess set donated by Mr. J. C. P. Kirkwood (vice-president). Air. J. K. L. AVebling was the runner-up. Messrs. H. J. Fuller, AV. E. H. Strange and C. R. Dallas were all well to the fore.

Air. A. T. Craven, the AVellington vicepresident. occupied the chair at the recent quarterly council meeting of the New Zealand Chess Association. Air. Hardy, honorary secretary, reported that a good entry appeared to be assurred for the next championship congress, scheduled to commence on Boxing Day. It will be held in Auckland if possible; the final decision regarding the venue is to be made in a mouth's time.
