COMPOST-MAKING
Demonstration At Gardens
If the weather is fine, a large crowd is expected at the Wellington Botanical Gardens on Saturday afternoon next to witness the compost-making demonstrations which are a part of .the public education scheme of the Dig for Victory campaign committee. Various aspects of eompost-ma'king, its use in building up the fertility of the soil and in checking plant diseases and its practical value to the backyard gardener who. seeks big crops from a small plot, will be dealt with by the chairman of the Auckland Dig for Victory Committee, Dr. Guy Chapman. The actual compost-making will be under the supervision of Mr. J. Stirling, .foreman of the Botanical Gardens, who is an authority on compost and its preparation. . Visitors will also be shown the special brick compost bins in use at the gardens, and will be invited to ask the experts in attendance any questions relating to this or any other subject likely to assist home gardeners who are interested in growing Vegetables successfuly. Other garden work which will be demonstrated will be seed-sowing and the pricking out of seedlings. The Caledonian Pipe Band -null play items from 2 p.m., so that visitors may see the fine display of tulips before the compost demonstrations commence. Extra trams will be provided from Courtenay Place to the Gardens.
